Spa break point: The Best Spa Hotels with Tennis

If, like us, you love a spa escape but also enjoy a game of tennis, why not indulge in both with a stay at one of the UK’s top spas with tennis? With more and more luxury spa hotels upping their tennis game, there’s a great choice of luxury spa hotels that combine wonderful wellness facilities with beautifully maintained tennis courts – plus top muscle easing treatments and delicious dining to refuel after your match.

Whether you’re looking for outdoor rallies in the sunshine, or indoor coaching to perfect your backhand slice, here’s our handpicked selection of spa and tennis hotels that serve up the best of both worlds, based on our personal spa review visits.

Chewton Glen
New Forest

A classic country house hotel escape with a serious tennis offering.

Known for its elegant blend of British tradition and comfort, Chewton Glen is a country house hotel with an award-winning spa and a smart indoor tennis centre. We revisited the hotel recently and were reminded of its peaceful rural location, just a short walk from the sea. Sport-loving guests can use the outdoor and pickleball courts on a complimentary basis, with indoor courts bookable for a small fee. And coaches are on hand for those looking to sharpen their game (bookable in advance).
The spa features several inviting pools, including a huge indoor hydrotherapy pool, and offers a wide range of treatments. We recommend the Seabody Touch Facial, as featured in our recent review. A stay at Chewton Glen never disappoints – and with the New Forest National Park on your doorstep it makes for a beautifully balanced escape.

Cotswolds

Tranquil countryside luxury with a smart new fitness centre and two outdoor tennis courts.

Set in 220 acres of rolling Cotswolds countryside, Calcot & Spa is a Spavellous favourite that offers a restful rural retreat with a serious focus on wellness. The much-loved spa has a good-sized indoor and outdoor pool, that fireside hot tub, and a relaxed country house hotel vibe. There are plenty of thermal experiences to explore, top-notch treatments, and stylish new relaxation spaces.

Beyond the spa, you’ll find well-maintained outdoor tennis courts, lovely cycling trails, and the state-of-the-art Grain Store fitness space – perfect for a post-match Proverb stretch.

Families are well catered for too, with excellent childcare facilities, and the Brasserie restaurant is another highlight – especially if you’re up for ordering the signature cheese soufflé.

Gleneagles
Scotland

A grand sporting escape with activities aplenty, including tennis and Padel.

Gleneagles is no secret escape. This legendary luxury estate – the self-styled ‘Glorious Playground’ – has an unmatched pedigree in leisure and sport. While it’s best known for its world-class golf, the Perthshire resort also boasts eight tennis courts and three new Padel tennis courts, offering year-round tennis fun.

Expert coaching is available and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see a falconry display en route to the courts, as we did when we last visited.

If you’re looking for a post-match pick-me-up, we recommend booking Gleneagles’ Signature spa treatment, The Long Exhale, which is ‘designed to restore balance to your body and serenity to the mind’ and uses the hotel’s own apothecary-inspired products and jade stones to deliver this most soothing of treatments. Perfect for some post-match ‘me time’.

Tennis fans can enjoy two artificial all-weather tennis courts set within the grounds of the newly refurbished Walled Garden – which also has its own sandy beach and spa treatment area. Plus, there are plenty of other activities to keep active types busy, including Championship golf, cycling trails, and axe throwing.

Sequoia Spa is a long-time Spavellous favourite, with its dramatic black mosaic-tiled pool, aromatic steam rooms, and tailored holistic treatments. As you’ll see from our review, we love the spa’s soothing Bamford treatments.
In summer, the Walled Garden offers a private sanctuary complete with an inviting outdoor pool and al fresco cinema screenings, making this one of the most versatile spa and tennis hotels near London.

Lucknam Park Hotel and Spa
South West

A quintessential country house escape with classic charm
Sitting in a 500-acre estate of unspoiled parkland, Lucknam Park near Bath knows how to do traditional English luxury.

We love the light-filled spa which features a thermal suite, indoor pool with a swim-out hydro pool, and a lovely spa garden.

The 111Skin facials are rejuvenating and firming and the spa has recently partnered with Ashmira Botanica to deliver holistic treatments inspired by Chinese medicine.

The hotel has two all-weather outdoor tennis courts, a renowned equestrian centre, and it even has its own cookery school.

Dining is exceptional too, with Restaurant Hywel Jones having retained its Michelin star for over a decade, and the relaxed Brasserie by the spa has recently been refurbished to ensure its décor is as fresh as the seasonal food it serves.

A pastoral retreat with understated luxury, Thyme is one of our absolute favourite country house hotels, serving up the ultimate countryside escape.

With honey-stone cottages, picture perfect surroundings, and its own sister pub just a tennis ball’s-throw away, it ticks all the classic Cotswold boxes. Add in a couple of grass tennis courts and you’ve got the perfect escape.

And that’s all before you consider the field-to-fork dining, with many ingredients sourced from the estate. Plus, the naturally nurturing Meadow Spa and the holistic Botanical Bothy.

There’s a lovely outdoor swimming pool that’s open during the summer months too and gorgeous gardens and wildflower meadows to explore before retiring to one of the 17th-century cottages.
